The Certified Pool and Spa Pool Operator Certification (or CPO Certification) is a training program recognized by the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA). The certification provides you with everything you need to safely operate and manage a swimming pool, spa, or aquatic facility.
In fact, local laws in many states and provinces require CPO Certification for public or commercial pool operators. This means that all semi-public or public swimming pools and/or aquatic facilities have a CPO Certified operator on site in order to make sure that all codes, regulations, and safety standards are being met.
Now that you understand what CPO Certification is, let's look at how you can become certified.
There are multiple ways for someone to become a Certified Pool/Spa Operator!
CPO training includes both online and in-person formats:
Before you are eligible to take the exam, you must have completed all required modules or training sessions.
With Pool Training Academy's comprehensive training, your path to certification will feel like a breeze with the help of experienced instructors.
Yes! Throughout both online and in-person courses, our experienced instructors provide expert support and interactive guidance.
Our instructors have over 40 years of experience in the industry, offering real-world insights while helping guide you to success.
The CPO Certification is valid for five years before renewal is required.
Renewal must be obtained prior to the expiration of the current certification, though some states require you to renew after three years.
PLEASE NOTE: There are also other ways to get your CPO Certification, like attending a 2-day virtual Zoom class or a hybrid between online and in-person classes as well. These class options tend to be a little confusing, and many companies don't offer them because of their complicated nature and the need to split time between a computer and a classroom, but if you're interested in options and availability for these formats, please contact alex@pooltrainingacademy.com

A Certified Pool Operator (CPO) Course with Pool Training Academy will cover everything you need to become a swimming pool & spa operations professional!
Chemical testing and maintenance are at the heart of safe and effective pool operations. CPO requirements mandate that Certified Pool Operators master these essential skills to maintain the water quality and safety of public pools and spas.
The CPO certification course is designed to provide pool operators with extensive knowledge of chemical testing procedures, chemical hazards, the proper use of chemical feed systems, and strategies to reduce chemical costs, all in accordance with key safety regulations set by the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance and other leading industry authorities.
The CPO handbook serves as a valuable resource, offering step-by-step guidance on chemical testing, maintenance routines, and the safe operation of chemical feed systems.
Through the comprehensive CPO training program, participants learn the importance of regular chemical testing—monitoring pH, chlorine, and other critical water chemistry parameters—to ensure a healthy aquatic environment. The course also covers how to identify and mitigate chemical hazards, such as improper storage or handling of pool chemicals, which can lead to serious safety incidents, including diving accidents.
In addition to chemical testing, the CPO certification program teaches water chemistry management that prevents expensive repairs and replacements. The courses delve into related aspects of pool maintenance, such as pool water circulation, filtration systems, spa management, and overall water chemistry.

Upon passing the exam, you'll receive an electronic CPO certificate, demonstrating your professional credibility and competence in pool operations, including chemical testing and maintenance.
This certification is recognized throughout the aquatics industry and is often required by local regulations for anyone responsible for pool maintenance, spa operations, or aquatic facility management.
By becoming a CPO certified pool operator, you not only ensure compliance with safety regulations but also enhance your professional standing and open doors to new opportunities in the aquatics industry.
